Does Blending Fruit Destroy Fiber?
One of the biggest decisions I’ve made this year was to replace the cold-pressed juices on our Fruitive menu with our Produce Blends. As this video explains, they’re essentially the same recipes — only upgraded to include blended, whole fruits instead of just juice.
I came to this decision after learning that juicing removes fiber, the source of the polyphenol phytonutrients responsible for an essential part of a fruit’s health benefits.
My discovery came from a NutritionFacts video. In it, Dr. Michael Greger reviews multiple studies showing that whole-fruit juice (or even “cloudy” juice with a little fiber) contains more nutrients than just straight juice.
How important is drinking whole-fruit juice?
Another NutritionFacts video points to a study of apples’ cancer-fighting properties. The researchers found that an extract of phenolic-rich waste — the leftovers of apples pressed for juice — that actually slowed the spread of colon-cancer cells.
He also observed:
“Another study of purple grape juice found 90% of the nutrition thrown in the trash when we just drink the juice, rather than eat the whole fruit.”
Even drying fruit, he says, is a healthier choice than juicing it. Drying removes water but leaves the fiber and micronutrients intact. “Dried fruit in general (without added sugar) is very healthy.”
So from now on, I’ll be skipping juices. Instead, I’ll enjoy my fruits and veggies whole, blended into smoothies or unsweetened and dried or powdered!
