It was 10:06 pm when the call came in.

Rip Esselstyn jumped on the fire truck and raced to the restaurant with his crew. They found the owner lying on the ground after collapsing from a heart attack.

As the team performed chest compressions, the bar’s patrons shouted encouragement. “Come on, LD, you can make it!”

Luckily for LD, the firefighters were able to restart his heart. But what if LD could have avoided the heart attack altogether?

Before becoming a firefighter, Rip Esslystyn had been a world-class triathlete. During 10 years of competing, he maintained a grueling training schedule.

 And through it all, he writes, “I maintained a plant-strong diet to enhance my recovery between two or three daily workouts and to give me an edge on race day.” What motivated his choice of diet?

Lifelong exposure to the idea that what we eat has a direct effect on our health! Rip’s father, the noted author and researcher Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., has long promoted a diet that prevents and reverses heart disease.

He’s also an Olympic rowing champion and decorated Vietnam veteran who’s been eating plant-based foods for more than 35 years.

In The Engine 2 Diet, Rip reminds readers of his father’s “profound evidence-based research on the arrest and reversal of heart disease on the planet… His patients demonstrated striking reversal of the plaque in their diseased arteries.” 

He continues: “Remember his prescription? Eat a completely, low-fat, plant-based diet.”

Rip designed the Engine 2 Diet to save the lives of his fellow firefighters and community. It consists of an easy-to-follow, two- to four-week food plan using only:

  • fruits

  • vegetables

  • beans

  • whole grains

and nuts and seeds

As he puts it:

 “During this time you will push to the back burner all meats and dairy products, as well as refined and processed foods — including extracted oils. This regimen is the best way to fight the dangerous fires raging inside of us — fires that create all the chronic Western ailments, including heart attack, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.”

And as for LD? The Engine 2 Diet clearly demonstrates that eating a whole-food, vegan diet could probably have saved him from his heart attack!
