Alona Pulde had dreamed of becoming a doctor since she was just four years old. But her father’s sudden death from a heart attack at the age of 55 disillusioned the young healer with the practices of Western medicine.

Not long after his passing, Alona found a kindred spirit in Dr. Matthew Lederman. He introduced her to the research of plant-based luminaries John McDougall, MD, T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Caldwell Esselstyn, MD.

Soon, they were married and building their own medical practice based on treating their patients through nutrition. They had begun to fulfill their shared dream of preventing and reversing chronic illness naturally.

The couple loved restoring their patients’ health through simple lifestyle changes. In the process, they got really good at answering questions. And questioned they were!

“Where will I get my protein?” was the nearly universal reaction whenever the doctors advised a patient to stop eating animal-based foods.

The answers to that and many other, questions are in their book, The Forks Over Knives Plan: How to Transition to the Life-Saving, Whole-Food, Plant-Based Diet . As they explain in Week One of the Plan:

“… Protein deficiency is almost exclusively seen in people suffering from calorie deficiency… when that happens the concern should be getting more calories and all nutrients — not just protein…In fact, you should not worry about how much protein you’re getting any more than you should worry about the perfect number of breaths you take in a day.”

They insist that meeting your protein requirement is a given, as long as you “eat whole, plant-based foods, which have ratios of protein and carbs and all other nutrients in proper proportions.”

In the first half of The Forks Over Knives Plan, the doctors detail their well-developed strategy for adopting a plant-based lifestyle. Its second half contains a collection of recipes from renowned vegan chefs.

And in 2009, filmmaker Brian Wendel reached out to the doctors with an invitation to join the cast of his Forks Over Knives movie. As a result, their life-giving message has spread well beyond their medical practice!
