While reading Dr. Neal Barnard’s Your Body in Balance on a flight this afternoon, I felt slightly embarrassed to be seen with a book about hormones. The lady next to me kept glancing over as I furiously highlighted page after page.
I initially tried to hide the front cover from the passengers in my row. But by the time I was done, I wanted to share the book with the entire plane (and the entire planet!) Your Body in Balance takes an eye-opening look our food choices’ impact on our hormones.
Dr. Barnard — who started the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine 35 years ago — has gathered a remarkable number of stories from people healed through healthy eating.
This book includes some of those stories, along with the scientific research behind their transformations. Written for men and women in all stages of life, Your Body in Balance devotes many chapters to the relationship between hormones and diseases, including:
and metabolic issues.
As Dr. Barnard writes in the Introduction:
“… your hormones turn your metabolism up or down, alter your moods, control your reproductive function, and affect how you store body fat and how you burn it… Equally surprising is how fast things can improve with a menu adjustment: Cramps gone in the very first month after a diet change. Fertility restored within a few months. Diabetes starting to improve in a matter of days… these are all things we have seen routinely.”
In other words, hormones do much more than drive teens to erratic behavior. They also drive the proper function of our organs — from the day we’re born until the day we die.
Everyone should read this book!
